There's no reason to be paranoid about fluoride exposure. From tea to seafood, fluoride occurs naturally in many of our food sources. The amount contained in over-the-counter dental products is just enough to benefit our teeth without causing any health problems.
Fluoride overdose is not as common as some make it sound. In cases of severe poisoning, the most likely scenario was that of an unsupervised child consuming a large amount of fluoride product.
How to Safely Use Fluoride in Your Family
Keep all fluoride-based products out of the reach of small children. If your child uses a fluoride rinse or toothpaste as one of our dentists recommend, then monitor how much and how often they do so. Children who aren't old enough to spit out toothpaste after brushing should use a fluoride-free product. If you suspect your child has swallowed just a small amount of fluoride toothpaste, they are probably fine.
When you're not sure about how much fluoride may have been ingested, give your child a glass of milk or some yogurt. Calcium in dairy products will bind to the fluoride to prevent harmful absorption. Call poison control for more instructions.
